When a child is hurt, who does he/she call out for? Usually, it’s mommy. Giygas somehow knew that Ness and Maria were the same person, although he may not have been consciously aware of it. But perhaps someone who could sense PSI would be able to tell that they had the same… soul, I guess. Ness, of course, doesn’t remember his life as Maria. Ness looks and dresses like Ninten because she knew Giygas would target such a child and give him the opportunity to build his strength. After her death in Mother 1, she immediately was reborn into a child that would be in the right place at the right time to eventually face off against Giygas. My theory is that because Maria helped to create Giygas (by raising him and showing him love, thus inadvertently causing his suffering at the end of Mother 1) she had to be the one to face off against him in the end. It looks very different in each appearance, but that can be explained by Ness living a very different life than Maria and thus gathering different dreams and memories. It only appears twice in the series: Once as the land of Maria’s mind, then as the land of Ness’ mind. Ninten collected them, but he was just the delivery boy.Īnother thing that links Ness with Maria is Magicant. Granted, the melodies collected are completely different, but the basic idea is the same: both Ness and Maria needed the melodies. Then it occurred to me: Ninten was collecting the Eight Melodies for Maria, while Ness was collecting them for himself. My first thought was maybe fate decided that Ness was stronger/more capable than Ninten, even though they both collected the Eight Melodies and faced off against Giygas. However, I found myself wondering… assuming MOTHER & MOTHER 2 take place in the same timeline, why is Ness the one that has to defeat Giygas? Why couldn’t Ninten do it? I know the idea that Ness and Ninten are somehow connected (Brothers, father/son, reincarnation, alternate-timeline selves, whatever) is pretty popular. I posted this on TVTropes a little while back (I dump a lot of theories on TVTropes, haha), but I’m kinda fond of this theory, so I wanted to see what you guys think. I’m sitting here in bed trying to sleep and it’s obviously not going to come to me anytime soon, so I thought I might post something here. Don’t read if you haven’t played Mother 1~ Yarr, there be spoilers for a 20something year old game below.
